Documentum Webinar on Collaboration in Government

Documentum hosted a webinar today on Collaboration in Business, arecording of which is available from the Documentum web site.  It was focused more specifically on how Documentum eRoom 6 and 7 could be used in a cross-agency environment.

Key points:

• Documentum eRoom provides an individual workspace for projects. This is a structured set of documents, discussion threads and calendar events, among others, for a project group or team.


• Government is a key sector of focus because existing cross-agency collaboration technology doesn't work.


• eRoom provides universal access to all content, context and decision trails, with real-time and asynchronous communication tools, project templates, and integration with enterprise content management repositories. Roll-ups of various documents, issues, and tasks to anoverall summary view is possible.


• Whilst pricing was not discussed, neither Documentum's content management nor team collaboration offerings come cheap. Both attract top-of-the-line pricing.

The presenter was asked during Q&A who Documentum saw as their competitors. The pure-plays noted were Groove, Kubi Software andIntraspect ... a strange title for three quite diverse companies. OpenTextwas noted as a "collaboration vendor", and Microsoft (with SharePoint) and IBM Lotus (with Notes/Domino and QuickPlace) were also noted. I see Intraspect as having the most complete competitive offering, in particular its Project Delivery and Program Management Office offering.

"With purse strings still tight, enterprises may also look beyond incorporating presence because, said Michael Sampson, an editor and consulting analyst with Ferris Research, the ROI is unproven as of yet. Most of the advantages of having presence incorporated into business applications have to do with teamwork, speed, and efficiency, which aren't always easy to quantify."
