Items of interest for today:
- Parlano released Version 5.4 of its MindAlign enterprise IM and collaboration platform. New features: 'story' messaging (for managing long posts), enhanced user identification controls, and improved management capabilities (channel category management, Active Directory and LDAP support), among others. Available immediately. Parlano
- Parlano introduced a new IM and collaboration archiving server, the MindAlign Archive Server. Key features: integrates all MindAlign system configuration and message activity into third-party data and information management solutions. Comment: Good move on the part of MindAlign. Large enterprises DO NOT want to establish another archiving repository for its IM transcripts, given that they will already have existing archiving and compliance systems. This release is another signal that Parlano is serious about the enterprise space. I like this technology offering from Parlano. Parlano
- The American Welding Society, a professional association with more than 50,000 members worldwide, has implemented a team workspace-based solution for managing collaboration between its working committees. The solution provider is Open Text with its Livelink collaboration and content management software. Comment: Two things stand out here. Firstly, good win for Open Text, which has been a much stronger player in Europe than in the US. Secondly, the Society's decision to go with Livelink is another tacit acknowledge that 'email is no longer sufficient or efficient' for managing ongoing communication and collaboration between an extended group of people over an extended period of time, a key tenet behind the research and consulting here at Shared Spaces. - As a result of attending Lotusphere 2004 and 'getting' IBM's vision and intent around Notes, Domino and Workplace, John Vaughan, a long time Notes/Domino developer, writes in SearchDomino that "Notes as we know it today still has a healthy tenure ahead of it". SearchDomino
- The new US Air Force portal is ready to go, offering access to all services and applications required by Air Force personnel. The portal includes presence awareness and IM capabilities, but those features have been turned off pending a security review. af.mil
- BusinessWeek ruminates about Microsoft as the new global phone company. The fundamental argument is that if enterprises embrace its Office Live Communications Server, and use it for voice conferencing over an Internet-style network, Microsoft would become a BIG player in global telephony.
