- SearchCIO gives a for and against analysis for enterprise instant messaging. The "for" reasons: (1) it enables team members at remote locations to keep in touch more closely and more naturely, (2) IM cuts through the clutter of email, (3) presence and availability gives visual clues as to who is available at any time, and (4) employees won't forever mindlessly chit-chat via IM. The "against" reasons: (1) it is disruptive to focus and attention-to-task, (2) it can lead to misunderstandings (eg, by replying to the wrong person in a multi-chat environment), (3) no permanent record of IM interactions (unlike email), and (4) IM spam.
