Michael,

Good summary (as always).

On the "plethora of servers to be deployed and managed" aspect ..
Bare in mind that a number of the servers provide a very specific function which is not commonly found in the collaboration platform of (some of)other vendors.
Many clients don't have a specific need for company wide Project (Portfolio) Server for example ...

Michael,

Your points are well taken and more accurate than not. I think the term "simplify collaboration" needs to be redefined and 're-contexted' for today's computer environments, especially when it comes to the Microsoft landscape.

We all find ourselves yearning for simpler to use software and less complicated IT-driven solutions. The reality is we are in the business of managing complexity, and the years are long gone where simple is a realistic goal. I'd settle for less confusing. Pass the pencil please!

You might also want to take a look at the team level collaboration capabilities that are creeping in to OneNote. There are some interesting capabilities in OneNote shared notebooks that don't require the proverbial plethora of servers. I've been beta testing OneNote 2007 and we're finding it useful in small distributed teams.
